Sickness Indication It is estimated that 10 million cats are diagnosed with Urinary Tract Infections by Vets each year. If not detected early, these infections can quickly become severe and even cause death. Pet Ecology's Sickness Indicating Cat Litter is the ONLY known non-prescription cat litter in the market that warns cat owners that their cat may be sick thereby permitting the earliest diagnosis and treatment.

Ultra-Lightweight Because of its composition, Scientific Professional™ Cat Litter weighs one-seventh of the weight of traditional cat litters (2.5lbs works like 17.5lbs of traditional clay litter).

Safe for Pets and the Environment Scientific Professional™ Cat Litter is environmentally friendly and does not contain any sodium bentonite. Traditional clay-based cat litter contains sodium bentonite as the clumping agent. Once sodium bentonite clumps, it gains the consistency of cement. This presents a number of problems. Once in the landfills, these sodium bentonite based products do not break down and are creating an environmental problem. Further, cats tend to get the litter on their fur when they use the litter box. As reported in the Journal of Veterinarians and Humans[1], sodium bentonite in the litter, ingested by cats during the natural cleaning process, can cause blockages, dehydration, and prevent absorption of nutrients.

Destroys Odor Scientific Professional™ Cat Litter also contains a powerful odor control product, which is not enzyme based, as are most other odor control products, so it is safe and can be ingested by humans or animals without harm (although this is not recommended).

Scoopable Scientific Professional™ Cat Litter is clumping, 100% flushable and ecologically safe for pets, people, and our planet.

What is FLUTD?

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease is a generally accepted term that describes a variety of diseases in the lower urinary tract of the domestic cat. A significant percentage of cats treated by veterinarians each year suffer from FLUTD. If not detected early, these conditions can quickly become severe and even cause death.

What causes urinary tract diseases?

Because FLUTD is not really a single disease, there can be a number of factors that cause the condition. Urinary tract irritation may be caused by infections, tumors, urethral plugs, uroliths (a pebble or stone), or crystals in the tract. Feline Urolithiasis refers to the formation of stones or crystals of magnesium and ammonium phosphate, called struvites, that form and accumulate in the cat’s bladder. These crystals can block the flow of urine, especially in male cats. If the flow is completely shut down, waste products usually eliminated through urine can accumulate in the body. Kidney failure, coma and death can result.

Is my cat in a high-risk group?

Urinary tract diseases affect all breeds and all age groups. Cats previously treated for FLUTD are very susceptible to and are at the highest risk for recurrence. Neutered males are also very high risks due to the physiology of the male cat’s narrower urethra. Stressful situations such as weather changes, moving to a new home or introducing a new pet into the home have been linked to higher incidences of urinary tract disease.

How can Scientific Professional Cat Litter with Sickness Indicator help?

Scientific Professional Cat Litter with Sickness Indicator not only can help you monitor your cat’s urinary tract health, but might also help you save money by early detection of urinary tract imbalances that can cause more severe conditions.

How does Scientific Professional Cat Litter with Sickness Indicator work?

The less acidic a cat’s urine, the more susceptible it is to forming stones or crystals in the urinary tract. The most common type of crystals present in the urine are struvites, which form more frequently if pH measures 6.6 or above. Scientific Professional Cat Litter is designed to be an early warning system for elevated pH. The litter color changes to varying shades of pale pink to magenta when the pH in a cat’s urine is above normal. The darker the shade of pink, the more serious the problem may be.

What should I do if the litter turns pink?

Examine clumps for any pink color before scooping and flushing. If the litter clumps are pink, a pH imbalance and possible infection in the urinary tract is indicated. If the litter clumps show color in the Mild range on the indicator chart and no other signs of a urinary tract problem are evident, observe your cat for 1-2 days.

If color persists or is in the Serious to Urgent range, or if your cat shows other signs of urinary tract infection, contact your veterinarian immediately.

How else can I tell if my cat has a urinary tract problem?

Your cat may have an infection if he or she:

- Urinates frequently or has problems urinating.

- Deviates from usual litter box habits.

- Leaves blood or blood-tinged urine in the litter box.

- Paces restlessly, cries, vomits, licks it’s genitals frequently, or rests on cool surfaces such as bathtubs or tile floors.

How do I use Scientific Professional Cat Litter with Sickness Indicator?

Scientific Professional is the perfect litter for everyday use because it is so convenient and helps you monitor your cat’s urinary tract health. If you use it only as a check up, you should keep it in the litter pan for at least five to seven consecutive days each month to check for possible urinary tract infections, and even more often if recommended by a veterinarian or if your cat is in a high risk group. If your cat does not like change, or to ease your cat into Scientific Professional, start your cat off by mixing Scientific Professional with the current litter in a blend of 2 parts of your regular litter to 1 part Scientific Professional. (Be patient with older cats as they adjust to this unique lightweight litter.)

Can I prevent urinary tract infections?

FLUTD has been associated with gender, age, environment, stress, fluid intake and diet. It is important to note that even when a pet owner goes to the expense of a prescription diet, the cat may still develop FLUTD because of the many contributing factors unrelated to diet.

Regardless of cost, no diet absolutely prevents FLUTD. Owners can play a big part by:

- Feeding the cat a diet that provides complete and balanced nutrition.

- Not feeding the cat from the table or indulging in too many treats.

-Feeding the cat at regular times and in the same comfortable location.

- Providing fresh, clean water at all times.

I have a multi-cat household. How do I know which one has urinary tract problems?

It is recommended that the multi-cat owner use Scientific Professional Cat Litter with Sickness Indicator universally. If there is discoloration in the pink to magenta ranges, begin to isolate each cat with its individual litter pan of Scientific Professional Cat Litter until the cat with potential urinary tract problems is identified.
